Environmental change has been a characteristic feature of life on earth, and has been a major influence on the evolution and global distribution of biodiversity. Recent marked changes in global climate are predicted to continue. Climate change is considered as a key threat to biodiversity and to the structure and function of ecosystems. Here, we review the current understanding of climate change and describe the likely consequences for the fishes of Britain and Ireland through a series of case studies detailing the likely response of several marine, diadromous and freshwater fishes to climate change.
